“Petula Clark’s song “Downtown” was in the back of my mind throughout the time I painted these (mostly) plein air paintings of Medford and Jacksonville. It was energizing and uplifting to be out where people converge at small businesses that add so much individuality to our communities. Historic buildings, alleyways with buildings whose windows reflect the sky, train crossings, awnings, dumpsters, traffic lights, signage, sidewalk seating and umbrellas were all useful compositional devices.”

“My recent visit to the southernmost continent led to an unpredictable journey. The Drake Passage was tumultuous upon our embarkation, which caused our captain to steer toward the less often visited Weddell Sea. We successfully touched the Eastern Antarctic Peninsula’s frosty mainland. We hiked dry volcanic islands and cut through slow-moving ice sheets. The silent atmosphere was disturbed by various wildlife, including the iconic Emperor Penguins. Barren hills of sand and rock, and captivating sunsets, were reminiscent of my native home in the American Southwest. Upon return to my Medford, Oregon studio, I contemplated for several weeks how I might best share the expedition.” –William “Will” Halstead
