Secrets: Paintings by Claire O. Harkins

November 21, 2025-January 16, 2026

Local artist Claire O. Harkins depicts rich, whimsical scenes that invite viewers to ponder the secrets and narratives each may hold.

Artist Statement by Claire O. Harkins

I never feel more powerful, happy or in control, than when I am painting. I paint with frenzy, afraid someone will interrupt me. I take no prisoners. I dance and shout, pull weeds and constantly talk to my dog.

Like many women, I like to arrange my universe to my liking. It’s sometimes difficult to buy new furniture, or rearrange grown trees. When I’m painting, I am in control of this canvas universe and can make everything pink or purple, if I so desire. Frequently, I desire.

If I am painting a thigh, I can feel that thigh with my brush (do you want larger breasts, a nose job…no extra charge.) If I am painting flowers or fields I move within the petals or among the grass. I can feel the breeze from the mountains.

I love bold color, strong lines, light and shadows. In my landscapes, I love to showcase the local scenes. In my “Room Portraits”, I like to make up stories about who might be living there, what they might be doing. I fantasize about by-gone eras, when life might have been simpler.

I am not saving the world with my work, but would like to create some warmth, a smile and a glimpse of my version of a canvas universe. My work is collected regionally and internationally.

“Twin Peeks” Statement

By Jan Rosenberg and Barbara Schack

We’ve been working together in the studio weekly for almost a decade, collaborating, critiquing, and inspiring each other, side by side. This exhibit is a representation of the work that we have been doing over the past two years.

Our vision with “Twin Peeks” is to highlight our individual responses to a shared starting point. As you view our work, you may discover differences in composition, lighting, use of color or mark making. Each artist’s “signature” becomes an inspiration.

We treasure our friendship and our joint growth as artists. From the very beginning to the end result, we discuss the process with each other, make adjustments along the way, and are always surprised at the end result.

Photography and Wax: Embellished Photos by Michael Schnee

January 24–March 7, 2025

RECEPTION: Friday, February 21, 5–8pm

Southern Oregon photographer Michael Schnee uses encaustic in this series to add depth, texture and a luminescent glow to his photography. In contrast to the ubiquity of digital images, each photograph is transformed by the wax into a unique, physical, handmade work.

Artist’s statement about the exhibition

I am a Southern Oregon photographer with a strong interest in alternative photographic processes. In the past 18 months I have begun incorporating the encaustic wax technique to move beyond the static photograph to bring in more painterly elements. I enjoy the hands on quality of the encaustic process. In the digital age and the rise of AI I feel the need to express my individuality. Encaustic is an ancient medium that blends beautifully with photography to produce unique handmade art.
