Critique Group

Thursday, Feb 23, March 23, & April 27, 2–3:30 pm

Have you ever been stuck on an art piece, and you don’t know how to move forward? Maybe you want confirmation on whether or not a piece is finished, or feedback on how people are responding to it, or you just want to talk with other artists about the creative process. In this Critique Group, you can connect with other artists, gain insight into your artwork, and find out about other artists’ experiences. Join us in a critique group that encourages, supports, and helps artists develop their work further. Please bring 1–3 pieces of your own work. Moderated by Kim Hearon and Jenny Calaba.

Jenny Calaba

Jenny Calaba works with sculpture and installation, combining ceramic and glass to create fantastical entities.  She has a Master’s degree in studio art from California State University, Northridge.  Jenny has taught youth at the Rogue Gallery for over six years.  She has exhibited her work in Oregon and Southern California.

Kim Hearon has been the Executive Director of the Rogue Gallery & Art Center for ten years. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Southern Oregon University. She works in watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint.

Rogue Studio Figure Drawing Sessions

All skill levels welcome.  All media welcome

5 sessions, Tuesdays, February 28–March 28, 12–2:30 pm

Two and a half hours of moderated, uninstructed figure drawing sessions with a live model in the Rogue Studio.  Adults 18 years and older from beginning to advanced levels are welcome.  The sessions will include short gestures and longer sustained poses.  Students must provide their own drawing materials.  Drawing boards, worktables, and easels are available for use.

Discover Cold Wax with Alx Fox

All levels welcome. Oil

2 sessions, Friday, April 14 & Saturday, April 15, 10 am-3 pm

Cold wax is a distinctive technique that adds body, transparency and depth to oil paintings. Discover the ways cold wax can enhance your painting. Alx will work one on one with you as you explore the way this technique can influence your work. Whether you paint abstract or representational art, this workshop will be a valuable tool.

Cold Wax Registration

Alx Fox is an abstract impressionistic mixed media artist.  She studied photography, art history, and design at Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois.  Her career entails working in pastel and acrylics.  Her work is in private collections worldwide and is showcased in many national shows.

Oil and Acrylic Paintings Techniques with Linda Dixon

For Intermediate painters, and Oil and Acrylic

4 sessions, Wednesdays, May 3–May 31, 10:00 am–12:30 pm

Develop new skills in your oil or acrylic painting. This class will explore brushwork, palette knife technique, blending, lost and found edges, atmospheric perspective, and the various influences of light. Linda will help each student with color mixing, perspective, composition, brush technique, harmony, casting shadows, and use of color schemes. Landscapes, seascapes, portraits, still life, animals, abstracts, and non-objective are all welcome subjects in this class. This is a great class to expand your painting skills.

Linda Dixon began painting while living in Italy in 1992. She has a BFA in studio art from the University of Central Oklahoma.  She has taught many people how to paint for the first time and many more have improved their skills under her instruction.

All about Skies with Silvia Trujillo

All skill levels welcome.  All media welcome

Saturday, May 20, 2023, 10:00 am–4:00 pm

Discover the importance of skies in a landscape painting. In this class you will explore ways to impart luminosity to skies, strengthen compositions through effective placement of cloud shapes, handle the edges of a cloud, and enhance a mood with the creative use of color.

Silvia Trujillo is an artist and art instructor in Northern California and Oregon. She has over 20 years of experience in fine art study, painting, and teaching.  She is a master colorist, emphasizing color relationships, and works in both impressionistic and realistic styles.

Take Your Photography to the Next Level with Tom Glassman

All skill levels welcome. Photography

Dates and times to be determined by student(s) and instructor

Students will learn about tools, accessories, techniques, and lens selection to enhance their photography and printing. Students will be guided in how to look and “see creatively” for impressive photographs – even with a cell phone camera. Classes can be taken individually or as a group. Classes will be customized to what students want to learn and to their time schedule.

TUITION $40 per hour per student

Tom Glassman has extensive experience in photography.  He was creative director of several ad agencies.  Tom’s first love is still black and white photography, as evidenced by many of his images.  His work is in private collections throughout the U.S.  Tom has taught photography and fine art printing for many years.

Foundation in Color with Kristen O’Neill

All skill levels welcome. Acrylic

Saturday, July 15, 2023, 11:30 am–3:30 pm

Do you want to learn how to mix the color you want? How to avoid muddy colors? Understanding how to make a painting look more “realistic” and less “garish” when it comes to color? Learn to mix what you want, when you want it. Be able to mix “that color” again! Students will gain an understanding a variety of color schemes (primary, secondary, tertiary, analogous, complimentary, etc). With a special concentration on: Warm vs cool primaries, and how to neutralize a color.

MEMBERS $65, NON-MEMBERS $85
All materials provided. Class will use a mix of slow-drying and regular heavy body Golden acrylics.

Foundation in Color Registration

Kristen O’Neill graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. While in Chicago she realized how important nature is to her artwork. After moving to Oregon in 2015, Kristen discovered she loved teaching as much as she loves painting. She has taught classes to youth and adults at Grants Pass Museum of Art and Manley Art Center in Brookings, OR. She displays her art in a variety of venues in Southern Oregon. Kristen believes a down-to-earth, fun class is a great way to learn.
